Bay Area Businesses Advocating For Harmful Encampment Sweeps
Businesses are using their power and influence to pressure local governments and police into sweeping houseless encampments near their doorsteps. They need to be demanding care, services, and housing NOT SWEEPS.
Let them know with your money. You can start by boycotting these 3 Bay Area businesses who have been particularly active in advocating for harmful practices such as sweeps.
Boichik Bagels
Boichik has been a vocal advocate in supporting the criminalization of houselessness in Berkeley, most recently they supported the passing of Berkeley City Council's September 10th meeting item 37 allowing Berkeley to destroy houseless encampments without offering shelter. Boichick offers no solutions to the plight of the houseless, they just want them to GO AWAY. Boichik Bagels are sold in stores and has locations in Berkeley, Larkspur, Palo Alto, Santa Clara, and San Francisco.
Fieldwork Brewing Company
Fieldwork is one of a handful of West Berkeley businesses who have applied pressure to The City Of Berkeley to destroy houseless encampments despite the lack of shelter space and reasonable accommodations for disabled people. Most recently they have participated in a lawsuit that does not demand any positive solutions to the houseless crisis, only to get people away from their business.
It's called "gentrification" when a microbrewery tells a camp of elderly, disabled, people of color to GO AWAY. Fieldwork Brewing sells beer at various retailers and has locations in Berkeley, Corte Madera, Monterey, Napa, Roseville, Sacramento, San Leandro, San Mateo, and San Ramon.
Covenant Winery
Covenant is part of a coalition of West Berkeley businesses focused on eradicating the houseless encampments. Most recently they have participated in a lawsuit against the City Of Berkeley demanding that an encampment almost 2 blocks away be destroyed.
Impoverished people do not sour their wine. Covenant Winery does not care, they just want them to GO AWAY. Covenant Wines are sold by retailers and operate a tasting room in Berkeley.
This boycott is organized by The Berkeley Outreach Coalition, a collective of community orgs and non-profits formed in 2020 and dedicated to protecting the unhoused in Berkeley.
